Capoeira

Capoeira

Capoeira is a unique blend of dance, martial art and music; its’ origins lie in Brazilian slave camps but it has long been ‘urbanised and westernised’ to develop into a popular practice across the world. This film follows the life and loves of a group of Manchester¬†capoeristas¬† over a summer as they hone their skills in preparation for their annual Batizado (literally ‘baptism’) and the arrival of their Brazilian masters. Capoeira also explores the reverence that the protagonists hold for their artform, the symbolism of the music that they create and the respect they hold for its’ history. Co-directed with Emily Hogan.
