Mourinho: My Inspirations

Mourinho: My Inspirations

In April 2006, José Mourinho was about to win his second successive Premier League title at Chelsea, but this documentary had little to do with football.

My Inspirations was a sort of behind-the-man account of how Mourinho became the enigma known to the world and how he wanted to live his life away from the pervasive examination of the media, particularly in Britain. I explored his relationship with his family, good wine and the family’s pet dog (a good year before the infamous arrest and caution of Mourinho in relation to his dog), without making a single reference to football. We also alluded to footballing matters through discussing his theories on success, friendship, teamwork and the role of the media.

The documentary has never been aired, due to a complicated situation between the producers and Chelsea FC, or at least the media managers at Chelsea. This unfortunate situation remains one of the saddest things to happen to me during my career – only me, an editor and a few executive producers ever got to see the finished product before the plug was pulled on what could have been the sports documentary of the year.
